CGO or CMO

Chief growth officer vs chief marketing officer

A CMO owns marketing. A chief growth officer owns the commercial system marketing sits inside. The same distinction applies to the fractional versions.

Chief growth officer and chief marketing officer get used as upgrades of each other. They are not. A CMO is a functional executive. The scoreboard is marketing’s contribution, held against a sales team that has its own leader. A CGO exists because that split is no longer where the problem sits.

The full-time versions of both jobs are permanent seats. The fractional versions follow the same line. A fractional CMO runs marketing for part of the week. A fractional chief growth officer runs the commercial operating rhythm. The comparison of those two contracts is also written as fractional CMO versus fractional CGO.

What companies usually mean

“We need a CGO” often means the last marketing leader was judged on leads the sales team would not call pipeline. Changing the title does not fix the definition. The new seat has to be allowed to change the definition, the priority, and what gets stopped.

“We need a CMO” often means the company knows the motion and needs someone to lead the people producing it. That is a cleaner hire, and it is the wrong one to buy from this site.

Steven works the growth seat, part-time, with founder-led B2B companies. The offer is on the fractional chief growth officer page. A fractional CFO is neither of these jobs. Steven is not a fractional CFO.

The decision

Choose the side that matches the constraint.

01What is the difference between a CGO and a CMO?

A chief marketing officer leads marketing. A chief growth officer is accountable for how marketing, sales, and the offer combine into pipeline. The CGO job is wider, and it is easier to make vague.

02Does every company need a chief growth officer?

No. Many companies need a good marketing leader and a good sales leader with a founder who can still connect them. A CGO earns the seat when that connection has become the constraint.

03Is this the same as a fractional CMO search?

Only if the work is marketing leadership. If you need the wider seat part-time, read the fractional chief growth officer page. Steven does not take fractional CMO engagements.
