Marketing leadership
Fractional CMO vs a fractional chief growth officer
A fractional CMO owns marketing. A fractional chief growth officer owns the commercial decision across sales and marketing. How to choose.
| Fractional CMO | Fractional chief growth officer | |
|---|---|---|
| Owns | Marketing strategy, the marketing team, and the agencies briefed by marketing | The constraint, priorities, and operating rhythm across sales and marketing |
| Best when | Marketing delivery is the gap and sales already has a clear owner | The founder is still connecting marketing activity to pipeline |
| Judged on | Whether marketing produces demand the sales team can use | Whether the company can explain what is driving pipeline |
| Failure mode | A stronger marketing plan that sales does not trust | A leadership layer with no one left to execute |
| This site | Defined, not offered | Offered as fractional leadership |
A fractional CMO is a part-time marketing leader. The search is large because many companies feel the marketing seat before they can describe the commercial system around it.
The useful test is not seniority. It is the boundary of the job. If marketing can be judged on its own, with a sales team that already knows what a good opportunity is, a fractional CMO is a coherent hire. If every marketing result still has to be interpreted by the founder, the missing role is wider than marketing.
Where the roles get confused
A company will say it needs a fractional CMO when it is unhappy with leads. Unhappy with leads can mean the channel, the offer, the list, the handoff, or a sales team using a private definition of qualified. A CMO can improve the first of those. The others need someone who is allowed to change the shared rules.
A fractional chief growth officer is that someone, part-time. The role is described on the fractional leadership page. It is not a fractional CFO, and it is not an agency producing assets.
What to do with the decision
Write down the decisions the hire must be able to make without asking the founder. If they are all inside marketing, hire a marketing leader. If they include stopping a channel, changing a stage definition, or resetting what sales and marketing review each week, you are hiring a growth lead. When the team can execute and only the decision is missing, growth consulting is the lighter version of the same question.
The decision
Choose the side that matches the constraint.
01What is the difference between a fractional CMO and a fractional CGO?
A fractional CMO leads marketing. A fractional chief growth officer decides what is limiting growth across sales and marketing, sets the order of work, and runs the rhythm that holds both sides to it.
02Can one person do both?
Sometimes a small company needs one senior person to cover both for a while. The danger is a marketing job disguised as a growth job, or the reverse. The remit has to say which decisions they own and which they only advise on.
03Do you work as a fractional CMO?
No. If the need is campaign leadership inside an agreed marketing plan, Steven will say so and point you at a marketing lead. His work starts when the commercial picture itself is unclear.
