Sales leadership

Fractional CRO vs a fractional chief growth officer

A fractional CRO owns sales execution. A fractional chief growth officer owns the system around pipeline. Where the line sits.

A fractional CRO is a sales leader on a part-time contract. The job is to make a known motion convert: stages, coaching, forecast, and the handoff once a conversation is already in the building.

A fractional chief growth officer is hired one step earlier, or one step wider. The question is which part of the system deserves the next quarter of attention. That might be sales. It might be the offer, the account list, or a definition of qualified that marketing and sales do not share.

The expensive mix-up

Companies promote a strong closer into “growth” and then wonder why demand did not change. They also hire a growth lead and then expect that person to carry the forecast. Both mistakes come from using one title for two jobs.

If you can point at the stage where opportunities die, and the people who work that stage need leadership, look at a sales leader. If you can only point at a feeling that growth is inconsistent, start with a growth diagnostic or with fractional leadership. The finance version of this confusion is covered under fractional CFO. Steven is not a fractional CFO, and he is not a fractional CRO.

The decision

Choose the side that matches the constraint.

01What does a fractional CRO do?

A fractional chief revenue officer leads the sales engine part-time. Pipeline stages, manager rhythm, forecast quality, and how opportunities move. The assumption is that demand and the offer are already good enough to sell.

02When is a fractional CGO the better hire?

When you cannot yet tell whether the leak is the offer, the channel, the handoff, or the close. A CRO hired into that ambiguity will be judged on a number the rest of the company does not share.

03Can a growth lead replace a sales leader?

Not as a default. Steven does not take the closing seat. If the sales team needs a manager, that should be named separately from growth ownership.

Start with the problem

Bring the constraint, not the job title.

If the comparison still feels close, the discovery call is for sorting which hire the situation actually needs.
