Why “Corporate Training”​ needs a shake up….

Bored yet? Because 90% of corporate training is just that, a bore. A day where either you are forced to do or you volunteer because it gets you away from your desk for the afternoon.

But here is the thing, most (not all) corporate training days are dead boring. I have heard horror stories of 8 hours say watching someone present a powerpoint presentation word for word and not add anything else into it….I can even feel myself dozing off thinking about it.

Or the complete opposite, where you are trying to make it seem really “fun” and “hip” because the latest sales training book told you that the new in thing was to do giant Jenga to really build up your team rapport and get more sales…..sorry but I am calling bullshit.

The other situation where I see alot of people go wrong when they hire a trainer, they hire someone who is exactly like their culture, people already etc. But what do they bring to the table? If I was going to hire someone to do training I would want someone different! To mix things up, someone who can see new points of view and someone that can balance the fun and learning aspect.

My issue with alot of corporate training situations is this….. its old school thinking in a new world.

This is how I approach any corporate training situation, aligning the values of the staff, managers and shareholders. Often you will see three completely different values but all trying to get the same results (which means 1+1+1=17).

Let’s take recruitment for example, usually a high staff turnover rate. It is tough work, very bashful at times and you are often seen as the bad guy. For the majority of recruitment companies, I see the same benefits for the consultants, finish early for beers on Fridays, ski holidays, cash bonuses, etc etc etc. You can almost hear the desperation to please in alot of the job descriptions “PLEASE STAY WITH US….WE WILL DO ANYTHING”. But in reality, they won’t do anything.

How many times have you joined a company who really understood what your values are and catered your incentives to those? Guess what, not everyone wants to go and have beers on Fridays.

I have found, in both Corporate and my business coaching that once you align values. This has a HUGE knock on effect, in sales, customer service, staff retention and staff enjoyment.

Seriously, gone are the days where you have to see your staff dragging their feet into work on a Monday.

Companies need to get rid of their ego, listen to their staff and use effective training methods to get the results that everyone wants.No more full day slideshow days, sometimes giant Jenga, but always engagement between the trainer and the staff which yields the results desired.
