Fractional CMO
What a fractional CMO owns, and how that marketing leadership differs from a fractional chief growth officer.
A fractional CMO is a part-time chief marketing officer. The role usually owns marketing strategy and the marketing team: positioning, brand, demand programmes, and the agencies producing them. It is a marketing leadership hire.
A fractional chief growth officer sits across sales and marketing. The question is not “how do we run marketing better?” It is “what is limiting commercial growth, and who owns the next decision?”
Those jobs overlap, and companies often search both. They are not substitutes. If marketing delivery is the gap and sales already has a clear owner, a fractional CMO or a strong marketing lead may be the right hire. Steven does not sell that role. If the founder is still the only person who can connect marketing activity to pipeline, the growth role is the closer fit.
Steven is not a fractional CFO. A fractional CFO is a third, separate hire. Finance, marketing leadership, and growth ownership fail in different ways.
